Our Approach to Prostate Cancer Care

Maybe you landed on this page because you’re experiencing a rising PSA and you’re afraid you’ll hear the words “you have prostate cancer.” Or maybe you came to this page because you or a loved one has already received a diagnosis of prostate cancer. Either way, we can help.

Our board-certified urologists have a passion for helping patients and their families navigate a prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. From the initial prostate cancer biopsy to diagnosis to outlining your treatment options to your follow-up care, we’ll be with you every step of the way.

Overview of Prostate Cancer Treatment Options

For most patients with localized (confined) prostate cancer, options include the following (in no particular order):

  • Active surveillance, which includes scheduled biopsies and understanding molecular markers, such as the OncotypeDX Prostate Cancer Test
  • Radical prostatectomy, which involves removing the prostate and reconnecting the bladder to the urethra
  • Radiation, either external or internal radiation (the latter is known as brachytherapy or radioactive “seeds”)
  • HIFU, which involves using high intensity focused ultrasound energy to treat the cancer
  • Cryotherapy, which is a technique of freezing the prostate and cancer cells

An advanced prostate cancer diagnosis can be equal parts overwhelming and frightening. At Greater Boston Urology, we treat the advanced prostate cancer patient “in house” at our Advanced Prostate Cancer Center in Dedham. The patient works one-on-one with his own personal urologist and nurse navigator, but also benefits from our team of physicians who often collaborate.

Treatment options for advanced prostate cancer can vary widely and depend on each patient’s unique case. Our doctors work closely with each patient to develop a customized treatment plan, which might include one or more of the following:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Hormone therapy
  • Immunotherapy (PROVENGE)
Bottom line: If you or someone you love has prostate cancer, let us help.
