Axonics® Therapy

For fecal incontinence

Approximately 19 million adults in the United States suffer from bowel incontinence, also referred to as accidental bowel leakage.[1]

Axonics Therapy is an effective solution for treating symptoms of bowel (fecal) incontinence, overactive bladder including urinary urgency incontinence, and urinary retention.[2]

What is bowel incontinence

Fecal incontinence is the involuntary loss of liquid or solid stool, often caused by anal sphincter damage, nerve damage, constipation, or diarrhea. It ranges from occasional leakage to full loss of bowel control. You may be suffering from bowel incontinence if you have:

Bowel incontinence patient care pathway

Your doctor and his or her clinical team will follow a patient care pathway, which is a roadmap of the different treatment options available to you. The pathway starts with conservative treatments and then moves on to the advanced therapies.

Consult with a physician

Discuss your symptoms with your provider, begin keeping a baseline bowel diary, undergo any recommended diagnostic tests, and review available treatment options to determine the best approach for your care.

Initial treatment

Treatment options may include dietary changes, sphincter and pelvic floor exercises, over-the-counter antidiarrheal medications, and the use of a pessary when appropriate.

Advanced therapies

Minimally invasive treatment options may include sacral neuromodulation, such as stimulation therapies like Axonics, as well as surgical sphincter repair to help restore function and improve symptom control.

How does Axonics Therapy work?

Axonics Therapy provides gentle stimulation to the nerves that control the bladder and bowel, which can restore normal control and result in symptom improvement.
