What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is a condition in which the prostate enlarges. As it enlarges, it can press on and block the urethra. This can cause bothersome urinary symptoms, such as the following:

  • Frequent need to urinate both day and night
  • Weak or slow urinary stream
  • A sense that you cannot completely empty your bladder
  • Difficulty or delay in starting urination
  • Urgent feeling of needing to urinate
  • A urinary stream that stops and starts

Popular BPH treatments include prostate artery embolization (PAE), UroLift, Rezum, GreenLight Laser Therapy, and Aquablation Therapy. (Scroll down for relevant related videos.)

"I first met Dr. Corea for an annoying and painful medical problem which through tests that Dr. Corea gave me turned out to be a couple of stones and an enlarged prostate problem. Dr. Corea performed two procedures on me by laser to break the stone and the Green Laser surgery to open my prostate passageway. I'm now pain free and able to urinate very fast and easily. I would recommend Dr. Corea to everyone - he is caring and knows what he is doing. Thank you, Dr. Corea - A+ rating from me."

"Cannot say anything but 'exceptional.' The office staff, receptionist, nurse, doctor, and radiation technicians treated me exactly like you would want to be treated!"

"I have had a very good experience with GBU over the past 2+ years. The staff are helpful and very competent. All the services I have had, including prostate surgery, have gone very well indeed. Great job!"

"They are so helpful, friendly, and make procedures as painless as possible. I used to get very nervous before doctor's appointments, but not anymore."

"I have found the entire staff to treat me with respect and compassion in what can be difficult circumstances. I feel confident that I am receiving the best quality care available. Teamwork among all staff members is very evident and reassuring. I would not hesitate to recommend Greater Boston Urology to anyone."
