Greater Boston Urology Reflects on 2024

Every December, we like to step back and reflect on the last 12 months at GBU. Below are some of the highlights.

We welcomed two nurse practitioners, a physician assistant, an ultrasound technician, and a new practice manager to the GBU family.

Colleen Barry joined our Falmouth Care Center earlier this year. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The University of Scranton in Pennsylvania and her Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston. Learn more about Colleen here.

In the summer, Jessica Anderson joined the team in Plymouth. She's a board-certified family nurse practitioner with precepted clinical experience in adult and pediatric primary care settings. Before becoming an NP, she was a registered nurse for over 12 years in medical/surgical, telemetry, and labor and delivery settings. Learn more about Jessica here.

Samantha Tavano is an ultrasound technician in our Plymouth, Falmouth, and Hyannis locations. She's originally from the Cape where she pursued her LPN at Cape Cod Regional Technical School. Afterward, she headed south and earned her associate degree in applied science in diagnostic medical sonography from Southeastern College in Florida. Learn more about Samantha here.

We also welcomed Shonah Anderson to our Milton Care Center in the fall. Shonah earned her Master of Physician Assistant Studies from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Worcester. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Read more about Shonah here.

One of our wonderful practice managers, Kathy Donegan, retired from the Dedham Care Center over the summer. But our new practice manager, Jen Bryan, has kept things humming and fits right in.

Our doctors continue to impress.

Whether they're leading webinars or recording helpful videos, our doctors continue to share their knowledge. Here are video highlights from the past year.

Dr. Jonathan Brajtbord led a webinar on Biote testosterone replacement therapy.

Dr. Stephen S. Gillard discusses a treatment for BPH called Aquablation Therapy.

Dr. Michael Geffin talks about treatments for advanced prostate cancer . . .

. . . and focal cryotherapy for prostate cancer

Dr. Bleiler did a series of videos on various topics, including vasectomies, PSAs, and the one below on nocturia.

Dr. Mark Silva discusses percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL)

And a special shout-out to Dr. Micah Hemani.

We want to congratulate Dr. Micah Hemani for becoming a Principal Physician (physician owner) of Greater Boston Urology in June of this year. The practice is extremely fortunate to have Dr. Hemani on our team.

We upgraded our tech to detect prostate cancer as early as possible.

We recently upgraded our Philips Invivo UroNav 3D Fusion Biopsy equipment in the Dedham Care Center. This is a major diagnostic tool for identifying prostate cancer using MRI images. This technology is also available in our Plymouth Care Center. Read more about 3D fusion biopsies here and here.

We had a great day for the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk.

This year marked our 10th anniversary as the local presenting sponsor of the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk. Turnout was excellent, and nearly $175,000 was raised.

We opened our second interventional radiology center.

In 2022, we opened our first interventional radiology center in Plymouth. This month, we opened our second IR center at 161 Worcester Road, Suite #300, in Framingham (it's in the same building as our Framingham Care Center).

Eligible GBU patients can receive interventional radiology (IR) treatments (such as prostate artery embolization or PAE) in both locations. IR is minimally invasive and doesn't require anesthesia. Recovery times are a lot quicker, too. Read more about interventional radiology in this article.

Or check out this video about prostate artery embolization that appeared on American Health Front.

Coming up in 2025 . . .

We're looking forward to opening two new Care Centers in early 2025—one in Attleboro and the other in Leominster—to provide even more urology coverage in Massachusetts. And we have other great stuff in store as well, including several new doctors, so stay tuned.

Until then, and on behalf of all of us at GBU, we wish you and your family a joyful holiday season and a healthy new year.
