Adult Circumcision

Men who weren’t circumcised as infants might decide to have the procedure later in life for medical, religious, or social reasons.

You may consider adult circumcision if you have ongoing foreskin issues or recurrent infections. Medical reasons can also include reducing the risk of sexually transmitted infections and lowering the incidence of urinary tract infections.

The procedure

Adult circumcision is typically performed under local or general anesthesia and is usually completed within 30 to 60 minutes. It is most often done as an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to return home the same day. During the procedure, the foreskin is removed, and the remaining skin is carefully sutured to support proper healing. Because anesthesia is used, the procedure itself is generally painless. It does not negatively affect sexual performance, and some studies suggest it may even lead to improvements for certain individuals.

Recovery

After an adult circumcision, it is normal to experience some swelling and discomfort during the first one to two weeks. Full healing typically takes about four to six weeks. During recovery, erections may feel tight or uncomfortable as the tissue heals. It is important to avoid sexual activity until healing is complete to prevent complications and support proper recovery.
