Dedham, MA – Greater Boston Urology recently announced that Michael A. Geffin, M.D., a regionally recognized urologic surgeon, has been named Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for the integrated urology practice. Dr. Geffin is also a partner within GBU and the Director of Advanced Prostate Cancer Therapeutics. His appointment as CMO is effective April 1, 2018.
Dr. Geffin, who graduated from the Boston University School of Medicine and completed his internship, residency, and fellowships at Boston University Medical Center, has been practicing general urology in Massachusetts since 2000.
As CMO, Dr. Geffin will report to Greater Boston Urology’s Executive Council, chaired by Michael J. Curran, M.D., who is also GBU’s Chief Executive Officer. In this newly created position, Dr. Geffin will work to continue to advance the clinical practice of urology together with the fifteen board certified urologists within this independent practice organization.
“Dr. Geffin is an excellent physician and an experienced and accomplished surgeon. His knowledge of the local and regional medical community and market will be a major asset in helping to lead the practice at a time of major transformation and opportunity,” Dr. Curran said. “We are delighted that he is accepting this new role and the related responsibilities.”
Since Dr. Curran became the Chief Executive Officer six years ago, he has emphasized the importance of quality care within the practice. Dr. Geffin’s appointment will allow Dr. Curran to devote additional time to strategic planning and growth for GBU.
Dr. Geffin will play a critical role in the continuing development of GBU into a seamlessly integrated group practice with a broad range of efficient, centralized functions. Dr. Geffin’s responsibilities will include working with primary care physicians and hospital leadership on reimbursement and network strategies, providing high levels of satisfaction for patients and referring physicians, and establishing and monitoring measures to ensure excellence in clinical care. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Geffin will continue to see urology patients and provide surgical services.
“I am delighted and honored to be appointed to this new position,” Dr. Geffin said. “The doctors and leadership of Greater Boston Urology are superb and are already recognized as among the best in Metrowest and southeastern Massachusetts. Our challenge, and our commitment, is to become even better.”
In addition to practicing general urology, Dr. Geffin’s interests include minimally invasive urology and urologic oncology. He continues his academic affiliation with a staff position at Boston University Medical Center. Dr. Geffin is trained and certified in 3D MRI fusion biopsy, a diagnostic procedure with higher accuracy than biopsies guided by ultrasound alone. Dr. Geffin has presented at numerous speaking engagements, including the Massachusetts Prostate Cancer Symposium where he discussed why men undergoing prostate cancer treatment must take care of their bones.
