Urogynecology is the surgical sub-specialty of gynecology that specifically addresses female pelvic floor disorders.

At Greater Boston Urology, we have a dedicated Women’s Health Center in our Dedham location. Our urogynecologist, Dr. Angel Marie Johnson, directs this center, and she has created a warm, welcoming, and safe environment for women of all ages and backgrounds.

Dr. Johnson is famous for saying that urogynecology is all about improving a woman’s quality of life. Many of the symptoms she treats are common in post-menopausal women (such as the sudden urge to urinate or leaking that occurs when a person sneezes or coughs). Just because these are common symptoms, however, that doesn’t mean you need to live with them.

Dr. Johnson treats the following:

  • Overactive bladder (frequent urination, urinary urgency, urinary incontinence, nocturia)
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Stress urinary incontinence
  • Defecatory dysfunction (constipation, stool leakage, gas leakage)
  • Emptying disorders (difficulty urinating or moving bowels)
  • Birth trauma (e.g. trauma to the perineum during childbirth)
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Painful Bladder Syndrome or Interstitial Cystitis
  • Sexual dysfunction (desire/arousal disorders, dyspareunia, or painful intercourse)
  • Chronic pelvic pain, myofascial pelvic pain
  • Vulvodynia, vaginismus
  • Vaginal atrophy
  • Urethral abnormalities (urethral caruncle, urethral diverticulum, urethral stricture)
  • Congenital anomalies of the female reproductive tract (imperforate hymen, vaginal septums)
  • Vaginal masses (Bartholin gland abscess, Skene gland)
  • Vulvar/vaginal dermatosis (lichen sclerosus, lichen planus)
  • Fistula repair

If you’re dealing with a pelvic floor disorder, consider scheduling an appointment with Dr. Johnson. Note: We now offer pelvic floor physical therapy in our Women’s Health Center. Dr. Johnson will discuss whether this is a good fit for you.
